If I had super-power, I wouldn't immediately run out to the store and buy a costume.

Ok, we're going to try this blogger thing again. I write all my blogs in MySpace, but due to it's gradual death and Facebook and Twitter's lack of blogging options, I'm going to try and revive this as well.
So, here we go...

I had made plans months ago to visit Pittsburgh over the weekend to attend the Pittsburgh Comicon. For the past 13-14 years I've attended this convention without fail, and for the past 4-5 years, until this year, I've been a guest at the show alongside Dirk Manning selling my wares, promoting Nightmare World, Mr. Rhee, and various other artwork, making new connections, signing autographs, hanging out with fellow artists, drawing commissioned artwork, and sitting on stage drawing artwork for charity fundraisers alongside some big named peers.

This year things went a little screwy and Dirk Manning was unable to attend. Our booth was lost in some confusion, and what has been a business trip of sorts the past few years, turned into a vacation trip of sorts for Karin and I. Without actually having a table, I decided to only visit the Comicon Saturday morning, partially because I haven't missed a show in years, but mainly cause Stan Lee was going to be the guest of honor this year and I couldn't miss out on getting a chance to meet him.

And so, I did get to meet the great Stan Lee. I stood in line and anxiously awaited my chance to just say hi. I felt a little dumb standing in line with all these guys holding rare issues of Spider-man or Iron Man, posters of Stan Lee himself, or various other collectibles to get signed. I only had my Comicon program with me to get signed. I had no rare book he wrote that changed my life, no individual item that meant anything to me. I just had a deep admiration and respect. The autograph is nice, but all I wanted was a handshake.

So, I finally get up to him and shuffled down the conveyor like line where he's cranking out autograph after autograph and before I know it, my program has already been signed without so much of a glance from Stan Lee and he's signing away at the line of items his attendents are sliding in front of him. I stop for a moment and the attendents are trying to move us along so the 500 people in line behind me can get their books signed to put on ebay, and I look at Stan Lee and say "Excuse me, I just want to shake your hand." And he looks up for a moment. And it feels like the whole room stops. I continue, "I just want to say thanks for my childhood, and everything you've created and inspired." He gives a great big smile and says "Thank you. It was my pleasure." And then I was quickly shuffled away and the signing goes on. But I got my moment. I got to meet Stan Lee.

Stan Lee!

Me shaking Stan Lee's hand. Too bad the kid taking my picture cut my face off. Oh well.

My signed program. It'll be in a frame soon enough.

So the convention was a success. I met Stan Lee. Met up with Scott Wegener for a bit and talked about Atomic Robo's successes and he hooked me up with a new T-shirt, and a couple trade paper backs. I also learned that in a recent issue of Atomic Robo, within the background of a page he drew my giant robot design from my second back-up story. That means something I created is now within official Atomic Robo continuity. Awesome!

After the convention Karin and I visited Bodyworks Tattoo and Don McDonald who will be tattooing my left arm half sleeve. We hang out for about half and hour, discussed ideas, and I think he might be just as excited as I am about the project. While I was there we scheduled my appointments for early next year and I don't want to talk about the $$$ this thing will cost me over a couple months. But it's gonna be BADASS!

Some of Don's work for an idea of what I'm getting into...

While we were there, this guy was getting his stomach tattooed.

I am excited. We're going to do something robotic, and he has a bunch of high end reference material, ILM concept art and character schematics from the Transformer movie, and he's been dying to get a chance to use it. So, lucky me!

Finally, Karin and I enjoyed the rest of our trip. We drove around and saw a good chunk of Pittsburgh, went to Market Square, drove down to the Strip District and ate at the original Primanti Bros. We loved it so, much we ate at the location in Monroeville as well, but it wasn't quite the same. The original location has that soup nazi, rude, but quick strong service feel... and the food was heaven. A meal in a single sandwich. Love it!

So, another good weekend in the book.
And while Dirk Manning missed out on the convention this year, he had a fruitful weekend as well. He got the initial presale numbers for the Nightmare World #1 TPB and appearantly they're real, REAL good. So, thanks to everyone that has already ordered a copy.

Alls well that ends well.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Sad news.

Brodie was put to sleep today.

The little guy will be missed and has been survived by his owners Josh and Jonathan and step-owner Karin.

I'm sure he's causing a rukus in heaven biting toes and hiding bottle caps in couches.

Mournfully and low the man of God began his eulogy of the dead, and his doleful voice, mingled with the sobbing which it was its purpose to stimulate and sustain, rose and fell, seemed to come and go, like the sound of a sullen sea." by Bierce, Ambrose

You can’t tell me you don’t run into girls with guns on a daily basis.

Ok, I lied.

One last quickie blog before the year expires like my 30 gig zune. Google it. 12/31/08 - Zune 30 gig. It's crazy.

Anyways, one last piece of art for '08. Sumthin' a little more pop art-ish.

Enjoy! Everyone have a wonderful and safe New Year and I'll see you soon!

*edit: tweaked pic.

Peace!

Do vegetarians eat animal crackers?

My family is a little weird. Everyone knows that. There's something a little different about the Ross household. We're all a little off the beaten track, we're all pretty successful in our own artistic endevours, we stick together, and we have a few traditions slightly different than the rest of the world.

While most of the world is counting down the minutes to scarf down turkey breasts (or Tofurkey if that's your thing), stuffing, and cranberry sauce, my family for the past 17 years or so has eaten Mexican food. It started while we still lived in Lubbock, Texas and shared our thanksgiving with another family. For one year we thought we'd try something a little different and it was a fiesta. Upon moving to Pennsylvania we decided to continue with the mexican theme to remember our southern roots of sorts. And so it stuck...

Not standard tradition, but it's now ours and we look forward to this day every year. And this year, the tradition was bucked somewhat by having my brother Jesse cook all the food this year. And it was AMAZING. He's been surrounded by food most of his working career, having worked for a number of amazing restaurants, and decided to bring a gourmet touch to our usual meal.

It's kinda lame to write a whole blog about one meal... but damn.

Here's a list of the food he prepared.

Salsa Mexicana - served with homemade tortilla chips

Goat Cheese Dill Spread with fried plantain chips

Mango Pomegranate Guacamole

Clementine Jicama Salad with pumpkin seeds and lime vinaigrette

It was something else and now I'm feeling a little full and bloated with deliciousness.

Snoopy is almost like Santa or Satan. It was Halloween.

I'm home from spending my halloween weekend in Ohio and Michigan.

Friday-

Halloween night I spent my evening eating at a Mongolian restaurant where they cook with swords (totally badass and since it was Halloween one of the cooks was dressed as Kratos from God of War which made it even more badass), and then signed autographs and drew sketches at the Vault of Midnight in Ann Arbor, Michigan the rest of the evening. The VOM was an amazing two floor comic store filled with so many indy books and collectables I wanted to explode. It's been around for about 13 years and only within the past 2-3 years has even started carrying any books from Marvel or DC. To say it was a awesome shop is an understatement.

Vault of Midnight!

Downstairs.

Myself, Liz (one of the owners), and Dirk Manning

Our first group of loyal fans!

Signing away.

Dirk shows off his signature Cthulhu autograph sketch.

New fans come in all ages.

We discuss the finer side of monkeys and evil...

Resulting in Cthul-ape. Coming soon to a mini-comic for you.

Another happy fan!

Even Karin found herself having a good time. Finding beer probably helped the cause a little too.

More halloweened NW fans!

John McCain made an appearance too, and reminded everyone to Vote Tues Nov 4th! Who knew he liked Nightmare World?!

It was all fun and games until the zombie showed up.

Dirk tries to fend her off with tiny skulls...

... to no avail. Soon he was bitten and turned into a zombie as well.

I quickly became the next victim.

And like all zombie outbreaks the epidemic quickly spread through the whole store! Soon everyone was doing the Thriller!

Saturday-

We went to Cedar Point rollercoaster theme park. It currently holds the world record for most roller coasters with 17, one of them being the world's second tallest and second fastest roller coaster, Top Thrill Dragster, which reaches speeds of 120 mph and a height of 420 feet. Cedar Point is also the only amusement park with four roller coasters that are taller than 200 feet. As of 2008, Cedar Point is the only park in the world with 75 rides, becoming the park with the most rides. Known as "America's Roller Coast", Cedar Point has been voted "Best Amusement Park in the World" the past ten years.

This is the point where our rollercoaster stopped midway up it's tracks and the control guy came running like a banshee towards the train. We expected a mechanical error, but no, it was me... taking pictures. He stopped the train cause I was taking pictures. Appearently that's frowned upon and he threatened to kick me out of the park. Boo... anyways, I didn't take anymore coaster pics after that.

Here's the Top Thrill Dragster. It was the highest and fastest roller coaster in the world until about 2 years ago. 120 MPH in 4 seconds and reaches up 420 feet!

It's one of those rides even the video doesn't do it justice.

Snoopy is almost like Santa at the parade. Or satan. It was halloween and a little creepy.

And that's my weekend. How was your halloween?

Well, we’re not here to sell cookies... So, they know something’s up.

I designed my first 3/4 sleeve and watched the outline of it get tattooed last Friday. It's a crazy piece dealing with the elements of space and nature, and I've roughed out the color scheme for it. When it's all said and done, about a year from now, it's gonna be totally badass.

Also...

Needleplay is designing a couple new t-shirts and is looking for someone capable of printing off centered oversized designs similar to designs by Affliction or Skin Industries...

Examples of the styles we're looking for:

If anyone knows of a company that can produce good and affordable work (possibly full color - definately b&w) we'd love to hear about it, and if you are a printer, we'd love to get a quote from you! Thanks!

A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free

Hey all! I'm a busy bee so let's jump right into - News and updates!

The contracts are signed and the deal is done:

Starting at the beginning of November, NIGHTMARE WORLD is going to be part of Image Comics' new online Shadowline webcomic line-up/community located at http://shadowlinecomics.com/webcomics/

That's right, folks... NIGHTMARE WORLD is now part of the Image/Shadowline Comics line-up!

From Dirk Manning himself,

"To say that this is a dream come true is no hyperbole at all, as it was the creation of Image Comics that finally inspired me to follow my own dream of creating my own comics that could be owned by myself and my co-creators rather than a large corporate entity/publisher.

I've been very, very fortunate to have the success I've had to date with NIGHTMARE WORLD over the last several years due in no small part to the support of all of you who've read the series, enjoyed it and spread the word to other friends and fans and that -- as well as the countless hours of hard work the small army of artists and I dedicated to the series -- has resulted in the creation of a series that I'm very proud of... and now, at long last, I feel that we're finally making it to the 'big leagues.'"

Awesome news and exposure!

Random news:

The tattoo apprenticeship is going well. I'm getting antsy to start using the machines and actually tattooing. But it'll happen in due time. Right now I'm designing a 3/4 sleeve for a customer.

random Bat design.

I designed a new Needleplay t-shirt. Right now I'm gathering quotes from different printers to get the best quality and deal.

I'll post a bigger picture when we're about to sell them.

I'm midway through a new Mr. Rhee story for an upcoming anthology. I've tried a slightly different style with this one.

Jamie and I designed a Starbuck's coffee tasting logo...

Howard Schultz (chairman and CEO of Starbucks) offering communion...

And 10 minute color job...

My Atomic Robo back up story will be featured in issue 4!

Oh! I'll be in Ann Arbor, MI Halloween night at Vault of Midnight Comics signing books and doing sketches alongside of Dirk Manning!

Alright. Busy bee indeed.
